Venkov jako urbanistické téma, to zní jako protimluv. Vždyť ta nejjednodušší, intuitivní definice venkova je negativní: venkov je to, co není město. Tedy území, které není urbanizované. To ale není tak docela pravda. Venkov se liší od města spíše tím, že vykazuje nízkou míru urbanizace. Kvantitativní definice venkova, používané pro správní účely, to říkají jasně: venkov určuje jednak velikost obce, vyjádřena počtem obyvatel, jednak hustota zalidnění. Pokud jde o velikost sídla, obvykle se horní hranice pohybuje mezi 2000 až 3000 obyvatel. Do pojmu „venkov“ se tak snadno vejdou i malá města. Důležité jsou ovšem i kvalitativní charakteristiky, využití krajiny, způsob života obyvatel. Jiný charakter má venkov vzdálený od velkých měst a jiný je příměstský venkov, který je leckdy obtížné odlišit od suburbie. Aby to bylo ještě složitější, venkovský charakter mohou mít i lokality uvnitř velkých měst. Co je tedy vlastně venkov? Existuje jeden venkov, nebo spíše různé venkovy? Jaká jsou specifika architektonické práce na venkově?

The countryside as a theme for urban design – at first glance, this is a direct contradiction. Indeed, the simplest, most intuitive definition of the countryside is negative: the country is what is not the city. In other words, land that is not urbanised. Yet this is not entirely true. The countryside differs from the city more in that it displays a lower level of urbanisation. The quantitative definition of the ‘countryside’, as used for administrative purposes, states clearly: the countryside is determined by the size of the settlements and by the density of population. In terms of settlement size, the upper boundary ranges between 2000 and 3000 residents – such that the ‘countryside’ can include even smaller towns. No less important are the qualitative characteristics, the use of the land, the way of life of the inhabitants. A different character can be found in the countryside far away from large cities and in the suburban countryside, the latter sometimes hard to distinguish from actual suburbia. And to make matters still more complicated, a ‘rural’ character can be found even in localities inside large metropolitan areas. What in essence is the countryside? Is there one countryside, or instead various different countrysides? And what are the specifics of architectonic work in the countryside?
