Long before there was Simon and Garfunkel, there was just Paul and Artie - two high school seniors bonded by a passion for rock & roll.
This essential LP edition includes 19 remastered studio tracks from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel’s early years, consisting of a variety of seminal songs and hard-to-find sides they made for different labels (like Big, Bell, Madison, Octavia, Amy and even MGM) between 1957 and 1962. In addition to their initial project as Tom and Jerry, Garfunkel released some single records under the name Artie Garr. Simon also began writing songs independently and recording under such stagenames as True Taylor, Tico & The Triumphs, and Jerry Landis.
As a solo artist under the moniker Artie Garr (a shortened version of his name), Art Garfunkel recorded some catchy pop songs and doo-wop ballads, beginning with “Beat Love” / “Dream Alone”. The two tunes were released as a single by the Warwick label in 1959. They were followed by the 1961 single “Private World” / “Forgive Me,” which was issued on the Octavia label. Years later, in interviews, Garfunkel noted how these early singles distinguished him as a folk-styled crooner. While Simon & Garfunkel eventually went on to greater commercial success in the mid- and late ‘60s, all of these wonderful songs form the building blocks of their musical legacies.
