The Berlin Philharmonic Recordings has attracted attention for the uniquely beautiful packaging of its previous releases, but this Mahler LP box is exceptionally luxurious and beautiful. As with the CD+BD box, the cover art is "Untitled (small earth)" by Robert Longo, an American painter, sculptor, and film director. Robert Longo is an artist noted for his paintings, which are elaborate reproductions of photographs and drawings made with charcoal and graphite. The 17 LP sleeves are put together like a puzzle to form one large sun, and the product itself is like a work of art. Mahler's symphonies are now one of the most important repertoires of the world's orchestras. The tradition of Mahler performance in the Berlin Philharmonic dates back to the 1890s, when Mahler himself premiered his Second Symphony in 1895. Since then, Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, Sir John Barbirolli, Raphael Kubelík, Leonard Bernstein, Bernard Haitink, and many other Mahler conductors have performed with the Berlin Philharmonic as guest conductors. The history of the Berliner Philharmoniker's major repertoire can be clearly seen in the succession of chief conductors. Artur Nikisch had an early interest in Mahler, while Wilhelm Furtwängler kept his distance. From the 1970s onward, Herbert von Karajan concentrated on Mahler's works.Until Nikisch, Furtwängler, and Karajan, performances were limited to a few Mahler works, but after Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, and Kirill Petrenko incorporated the complete symphonies into their repertoire. This edition includes nine completed symphonies and the first movement of the unfinished Tenth Symphony, selected from performances over the past decade. It consists of performances by the current principal conductor Petrenko and his predecessors, Abbado and Rattle, as well as guest conductors. Among the performances, Kirill Petrenko's performance of No. 6 in January 2020, just prior to the spread of the new coronavirus, was a highly-actual concert. Petrenko builds his work with a unique intelligence and emotion based on a high perspective and broad vision. ?Record Geijutsu April 2021 Special Edition King International
